What is Apache Open Office?

Apache Open Office is the open source office software suite for word processing. spreadsheets, presentation, graphics, databases and much more. It’s an awesome FREE tool which provides you all the features free of cost that MS Office (paid) provides you. It’s a life saver for people like you and me who need a word processing software for our day to day job.

Why is Open Office Best?

Here are three solid qualities that make Open Office best tool for people like you and me.

  • Easy to use – Apache OpenOffice is easy to learn, and if you’re already using another office software package like MS Office then you don’t need to learn anything. Best thing is – if you already have files from another office package – OpenOffice will probably read them with no difficulty. This is a blessing for anyone who wants to migrate from MS office to Open Office.
  • Great Software Product – The software is the result of over twenty years of software engineering design and development. It’s a completely open development process which means that anyone can report bugs, request new features, or enhance the software.
  • And It’s FREE – Best of all, Apache OpenOffice can be downloaded and used entirely free of any license fees. Like all Apache Software Foundation software, Apache OpenOffice is free to use. Apache OpenOffice is released under the Apache 2.0 License. This means that you can use it for any purpose like domestic, commercial, educational, public administration. You can install it on as many computers as you like. You may make copies and give them away to family, friends, students, employees – anyone you like. • Well, I have used Open office earlier and of course it’s a best alternative to MS office. Recently we were given free license of Office 2013 by our employer (Now upgraded to 2016 🙂 ) and I am using it on my laptop and desktop. Though there are hell lot of features in latest MS office which are not there in Open office, it is still the best alternative 🙂 Thanks for sharing this.

    • Thanks Vishal for sharing your views. It would be great if you can share the challenges that you faced while using open office?

I believe you are the Lucky one who got free MS office license from the employer. :). But you know in the countries like the USA, Canada people generally have to purchase paid subscriptions for MS office (just 1 year) and that costs a lot of dollars every year to renew the subscription. In reality, Microsoft is making a significant amount of money in selling these Office products. If you Google “From Where Microsoft is making money” you will see 85% of Microsoft Business revenue comes from selling these office tools to businesses. And if something like OpenOffice comes up in the market then just imagine how bad it would be for Microsoft? It’s true that free product cannot match with the paid product but for general day to day to work its an awesome tool. 🙂

Last year when I bought a new laptop(US), I got MS office just for 1-month trial. In India, things are little different and you might know what I mean. 🙂

      • I completely agree with you Harpreet. Well, I said there are feature difference in both the MS office and Open office. I didn’t face any challenge while working on Open office. I increased my office usage recently as I can create better images for my blog posts using MS Powerpoint 🙂
And yes, I got the point what you mean in your last para 😛
